NETHER PORTAL
CALCULATOR.
Convert Overworld and Nether coordinates in either direction and get the exact block location for a cleaner portal network.
How Nether portal coordinates work
Minecraft compresses horizontal distance in the Nether. One block travelled in the Nether corresponds to eight blocks in the Overworld, so a well-planned Nether hub can connect distant bases quickly.
Overworld to Nether
Divide both X and Z by 8. Overworld coordinates X 800, Z -80 become Nether coordinates X 100, Z -10. Decimal results are shown exactly and rounded to a suggested whole block for construction.
Nether to Overworld
Multiply both X and Z by 8. This is useful when you discover a Nether fortress, bastion, biome, or highway junction and want to estimate its corresponding Overworld position.
What about the Y coordinate?
Y is not multiplied or divided. Minecraft searches for a nearby valid portal within its linking range, so use a practical elevation and build both sides close to the calculated horizontal position when precision matters.
Coordinate questions
What is the Overworld to Nether coordinate ratio?
Minecraft uses an 8:1 horizontal coordinate ratio. Divide Overworld X and Z coordinates by 8 to find the matching Nether location.
How do I convert Nether coordinates to the Overworld?
Multiply the Nether X and Z coordinates by 8. For example, Nether X 100 and Z -10 correspond to Overworld X 800 and Z -80.
Does the Y coordinate change between dimensions?
No fixed scale is applied to Y elevation. Portal placement uses horizontal X and Z proximity, while the game searches for a safe portal position at a suitable height.
Why can two nearby portals link incorrectly?
Portal search ranges can overlap. Building both portals close to their calculated X and Z coordinates and choosing sensible Y levels reduces unwanted cross-linking.
